Welcome to Adam Leavitt and Matt Bacon from Hogan Taylor Disciplined Investments — talented Certified Financial Planners. They are new to TAT and come from athletic backgrounds. (a sincere editor’s note: my husband and I are benefiting from his advise as we face retirement and financing college for our kids. He is a great help!)
We are happy to have Dr. Chuck Zoellner (chiropractor), and his brother Dr. Robert Zoellner (optometrist) helping the club and helping keep us healthy. Our vision and our physical well-being have no price.
TAT is so lucky to have the ongoing support of Tulsa Runner and Performance Care Clinic. Trani helps in countless small and large ways. Dr. Brian Flournoy served as president of TAT for a couple years and his A.R.T. chiropractic skills keep many of us SBRing comfortably and soundly.
Many of you know TATer Janet Wilson as “Coach-Janet”. She is a mainstay of our tri camp programs. She is a USAT-certified triathlon coach, focusing mostly on swim skills development in new and intermediate level triathletes. Also, as club treasurer she spends many hours a week on keeping our club running smoothly and responsibly.

Spring Fever? Yes, but with a hefty dose of left-over winter chill. Air temp was in the low 40′s as the first swimmers hit T1.
Once again, the “Claremore World Championship Triathlon” was contested at the Rec Center there, with some course modifications to accommodate a gun show going on next door in the convention center. Gun Show and Triathlon used in the same paragraph… that’s Oklahoma!
- Gobbling up some decadent egg sandwiches at the finish line.
- Clueless car driver cut into the coned off lane for the bicyclists and t-boned a Tri Tulsa Runner member, who THANKFULLY, was okay!
- weighing the benefits of staying warm on the bike versus slow T1 times to wiggle into extra bike clothes. I stayed warm on the bike; let’s leave it at that.
- Some of the volunteers came from the HOW Foundation (I think?) and they did great! Happy they helped so enthusiastically.
- Deciding that Sprint Tri’s hurt no matter how much or how little you train, and they are a great starting (or, in my case, restarting) point for the multisport lifestyle.
Keith Kelley battled back from a long-standing Achilles tendon injury to give the race a Thumbs Up. Did you know the thumb bone is connected to the Achilles tendon? For Keith it seems to be!

We challenge TAT members to participate in our new program to encourage member competition in TAT’s four races. The prizes will reward not just the FASTEST, but also PARTICIPATION.
In a nutshell, TAT members can participate in up to all FOUR of TAT’s multisport events in 2013 to earn points. The four events are:
- Spring Fever, April 20, 2013 (sign up here: https://earlysignup.com/springfever)
- Chris Brown Tulsa Duathlon, August 11, 2013 (sign up here: https://earlysignup.com/cbdu)
- TriTULSA Tri Festival Sprint distance event (September 7, 2013) (registration open soon)
- TriTULSA Tri Festival Olympic distance event (Septemebr 8, 2013) (registration open soon)
AWARDS (based on point system, see below) will be given to TOP MALE and TOP FEMALE. The big incentive, however, is the Perfect Participation Prize (P3), to be drawn randomly from the list of those who complete all four races.

- You must be a paid 2013 TAT member and a member of USAT.
- To be eligible for P3 prize drawing, you must register and complete all four TAT Race Series events.
- If you are only competing for top male or female, you have to compete in at least one TAT race series event. See item 7.
- Male and Female division for points.
- There will be only one P3 prize drawn from list of those who complete all four TAT Race Series events.
- The maximum point total available per TAT Race Series event is 33 points. That is, 33 points to the fastest male finisher, 33 points to the fastest female finisher, 32 points to the next fastest male and female finishers, and so on, down to 1 point to the slowest male and female finisher. EACH PARTICIPANT will receive a minimum of 1 point for completing each TAT Race Series event. If there are more than 32 male or female TAT finishers in an event the minimum number of points is still 1.
- Your score will be a total of no more than 3 TAT Race Series events. If you compete in all four events the lowest of the four scores will be dropped. (Your name is in still in the hat for wheel set drawing if you do all four events)
- In the event of a tie, the TAT Race Series competitors will be sorted by highest to lowest using the competitors’ USAT rankings.

We will be unveiling our 2013 bike jersey and tri kit designs on Monday April 8, at Tulsa Runner (96th and Riverside) at a WINE AND CHEESE open-house social. We will be there from 5:30 to 8:00 pm with the fit kits, vino and light finger foods. COME AS YOU ARE from work or training. Further info on prices, how to order and so on, will be announced during the event.

TAT usually has a group who ride one of a few routes from the Oktoberfest / Jackson Ave lot on Wednesday evenings during Daylight Savings Time. (This is where the Tulsa WNR phenomenon leaves from). We are mostly intermediate level riders, averaging maybe 15-17 mph. We welcome new riders to join in. We clip-in usually at 6 pm. We park along the green fence in the Oktoberfest lot, fairly close to Jackson Ave.
If you are new to riding, “clip-in” means the time we roll out on our bikes. So plan to get to the lot maybe 15 minutes before clip-in to get ready. We kinda stick together. If we know someone needs extra TLC we will try to make that happen.
(this is not the Tri Camp WNR)
Some requests to make TAT’s WNR successful for all (in no particular order):
- Know the routes. Learn them by riding with us, but then go back and study a map to be sure you can get around if you end up alone. We will try to not drop anyone, but it is still a good idea for you to be self-sufficient out there by knowing your own way home.
- If you are faster than the group and choose to ride ahead, more power to ya! But be sure to let someone else in the group know what is going on. Likewise, if you choose to fall back and ride apart from the main group, try to let us know.
- If you have only been on the trails and not the open roads, let us know, so we can give you a quick orientation to some of the more common “share the road” rules.
- Be courteous to cars, even if the temptation to give the one-finger salute if strong. Each bicyclist out there riding properly and politely reflects on us all. Likewise, one uninformed, or rude bicyclist will counteract 99 other nice bicyclists. Be familiar with share the roads rules.
- Be able to change your own flat, and have YOUR own stuff to do it. We can assist, certainly, and we virtually always all stop while a flat gets changed, but changing your own flat is a mark of a proficient, self-sufficient bicyclist. If you have a flat, or other mechanical, holler out so we know you’re stopping.
- We don’t mind tri bikes at all, but use common sense. No aero position in a tight peloton, or in heavy traffic. Hold your line, be aware of your surroundings. If you’re new to riding down on the aerobars, practice some on your own beforehand.
- If we use the trails for part of our ride, BE POLITE, slow down around other trail users, and yield to walkers, runners, skaters, kids, dogs, etc etc. We do not own the trails. Call out “on your left” if approaching and passing a person on foot. When in doubt SLOW DOWN.
- You don’t have to yell “car up” or “car back” since most of us can hear or see the car ourselves. In a similar vein, try not to call “clear” at an intersection. Each rider should choose for himself if indeed the intersection is clear to cross. HOWEVER, if you see someone about to cross into an oncoming vehicle or other bicyclist, it’s probably a good idea to yell out CAR RIGHT etc., … if you see that someone ahead of you is indeed unaware of a car back and at risk, holler out car back.
- Three-abreast is a no-no but sometimes happens, but be mindful that it is unlawful and irritating to motorists. Single file is sometimes prudent, even though not mandatory. Two-abreast is allowed, but not always prudent. Stopping at stop signs is the right thing to do. Especially in Sand Springs.

Here are some cool club events coming up, plus some announcements:

Membership includes a high-viz swim cap, a car sticker,and when they get here, temporary tattoos. $7.00 gets ya a nice quality TAT bike bottle. Additional swim caps will be for sale ($5)
3. We are planning a WNR kick-off tail gate party March 13. Info soon.
4. We’re so hip we have a Twitter account! @TAToklahoma.
5. We are planning a SWIM / S-U-P-SOCIAL when the area lakes are warmer. SUP = Stand Up Paddleboarding! (SUPOklahoma is on Facebook, btw)
6. More Beach-to-Beach-and-Beyond training opportunities as soon as we get some dates set.
7. ORU pool is OPEN – OPEN – OPEN. (old Mervyn’s commercial). Pool appears to be holding water well, and may be able to stay open all semester. So our Tuesday and Thursday swims are ON! Still 6-7 pm, and add’l $5 drop-in fee for other hours during regular pool hours. Monthly passes need to be arranged by talking to Julie at the Aerobics Center.
8. Kits—getting the kinks worked out. Strongly considering Sugoi again. Tweaking color scheme to appeal to women too, not just masculine colors.
10. TRI CAMP ’13 started with a free info meeting March 3 at 3 pm at Hideaway. SECOND INFO MEETING tentatively March 31. location TBA. We will partner with Tulsa Bicycle Club to use their Spring Training Rides for some of the bike training. Click on “newbies” link on the left side of home page for the details.

New this year: we have partnered with Earlysignup for our membership. We are adding some swag into this year’s membership too! Click here to join TAT. We have tweaked the “family” membership also. Please be mindful that it costs TAT about $10 a year per soul to insure you and your club mates so we appreciate your only signing up family members of race age who are likely to participate in sanctioned USAT events. We want to keep our admin costs low so we can add in more fun stuff, and the ever-important SWAG!
Don’t forget to print your membership card. You will need to show that EVERY time you swim at ORU pool.
