http://www.retul.com/about-retul.asp -…The Retul system reads the body in motion, in three dimensions….  The result is that the rider will have a true fit to his or her bike, maximizing efficiency and performance while avoiding discomfort or injury.

The benefits of the RETUL fit are:
It is repeatable.  This is important for many reasons; the most obvious would be the replacement of a seat, pedals, shoes or any other component that will change a riding position.  Ted can swap out a new seat on a bike that has been measured, and have it in the exact place with the exact angle of the old seat.  If the pedals are changed out, and the pedals have a different distance between the shaft and the top of the pedal, the bike can be changed to accommodate this difference.

Another benefit to the RETUL is the fitting is dynamic, whereas traditional fitting is static.  Fitting a person without the RETUL requires the rider to stop pedaling which releases the tension from muscles and joints.  As the fitter measures the rider, there are slight changes in the angles and positions due to the lack of force being applied.  RETUL takes care of this with the dynamic measuring and allows Ted to fit the bicycle to you.

For Ted to get someone measured and fit he goes through several steps.  The first step would be to find out about any pains and what type of biking you do.  Then Ted will stick on the Velcro dots and attach the RETUL LED sensors to specific points of the body.  This is how the program can determine the angles between every part of your body.  He will have the rider pedal, just like they normally would in a typical ride. The RETUL program captures the information so Ted can analyze it and changes in the rider’s position is then made.  After any changes the rider then pedals again and any changes are made again, until the resulting information meets the desired results and the rider is comfortable.

Now I am all about comfort and being comfortable has definitely been more enjoyable.  I got the RETUL done for several reasons.  I felt really stretched out on the bike and had to really reach to get into the aero position.  I also had some during extended training rides which was very nerve wracking and frustrating to say the least.  After changes are made to the bike and the fit is complete, Ted will use the ZIN pen to ‘trace’ the bike for future reference.  This is really handy in changing a bike seat or purchasing a new bike.  If you did purchase a new bike, Ted just needs to place the new bike on the stand, trace it with the ZIN pen and make any adjustments needed so it exactly matches the riders’ older bike.

After I had the RETUL done I felt very compact on my bike.  The first bike ride was a little different because I used slightly different muscle groups and I didn’t get any numbness.  Overall, this worked very well for me and I recommend this to anyone that feels they may need a better fit, has any chronic pain, or is recovered from any type of sports related surgery or injury.
